The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office are investigating a massive data breach involving the theft and subsequent leak of sensitive internal records.
The incident was attributed to the World Leaks extortion group, which reportedly rebranded from Hunters International. The breach did not target LAPD's primary network but instead compromised a digital storage system managed by the City Attorney’s Office.
Attackers broke into a storage repository containing discovery documents from previously settled or adjudicated civil litigation, stole a massive volume of data and listed it on their Tor-based leak site.
The compromised data includes:
- Police officer personnel files
- Internal affairs investigation records
- Unredacted criminal complaints
- Witness names and contact details
- Medical and health information
- Investigative files and discovery documents
The breach exposed approximately 7.7 terabytes of data across more than 337,000 files. The nature of the attack and the number of affected individuals are not disclosed.
The LAPD issued a public statement confirming they are working with the City Attorney’s Office to assess the full scope of the compromised files. Authorities are currently investigating the breach and monitoring social media platforms where some records have already surfaced. The City Attorney’s Office has not yet provided a detailed technical report on how the storage system was secured or if external security firms have been hired for forensics.
