The Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) reports that it was hit by a cyberattack on June 17 2024, which resulted in a data breach.

State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey reported the breach, noting that although the department's information services team managed to interrupt the hack before the attackers gained full access or locked the system, some data was still compromised.

Services like teacher certification processes were slowed down during the attack. Services have been restored and additional cybersecurity protocols have been implemented. The investigation is ongoing, involving the Alabama Attorney General's Office, federal and state law enforcement, and an independent contractor.

Potentially Compromised Data:

  • Full names
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Home addresses
  • Social Security numbers

The number of affected individuals and the nature of the attack is not disclosed.

Superintendent Mackey urged parents and local and state education employees to monitor their credit and assume their data was potentially compromised.
