Community First Credit Union has reported a data breach that potentially exposed sensitive customer information.

The breach, discovered in April, involved unauthorized access to the contents of an employee’s email account on September 6 and 7, 2023, as part of an attempt to commit financial fraud. Following the discovery, an investigation was conducted with assistance from the FBI, the California Attorney General’s office, and a hired cybersecurity firm.

The compromised information includes:

  • Social Security numbers,
  • Names,
  • Account information.

The credit union has not disclosed the number of affected individuals out of its more than 60,000 members nor how the breach was initially detected.

The credit union assures members that there is no evidence indicating the misuse of their information for identity theft or financial fraud. To mitigate potential risks, the credit union has provided members with a code for a free credit check via Experian, available until August 30, 2024, and advised on placing fraud alerts and credit freezes.
