Fauquier school district suffers ransomware attack, remains operational

A Virginia school district, Fauquier County Public Schools, successfully kept its classrooms operational despite a ransomware attack orchestrated by the  LockBit ransomware gang on September 12.

The district, overseeing 20 schools for over 11,200 students near Washington D.C., swiftly engaged cybersecurity experts and law enforcement agencies while initiating an internal investigation and incident response team to mitigate the impact.

Fortunately, the attack had a minimal effect, allowing uninterrupted operations.

The school district did not disclose any details about the attac or possible data exposed. They have so far focused on continuity of operation.

The LockBit gang claimed responsibility, demanding an undisclosed ransom by October 19, but no response or confirmation of data compromise was provided by the district. Ransomware groups frequently target educational institutions during critical periods, aiming to exploit the pressure surrounding school openings, exams, and graduations to extort hefty ransoms.

Some schools have managed to avoid severe disruption while others have suffered prolonged shutdowns.
