In a significant security incident, the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island, disclosed that their computer systems suffered a data breach in November, impacting personal data belonging to over 2,000 individuals.

This group encompasses inmates, staff members, and external vendors associated with the facility. The breach was caused by a virus that infiltrated the facility's systems, leading to immediate and stringent measures to limit its impact.

The breach led to various types of sensitive data being extracted from the facility’s systems and subsequently posted on the dark web. The exposed data includes:

  • financial records,
  • medical information of certain detainees,
  • personal and employment information of current and former staff,
  • specific details pertaining to vendors.
  • names,
  • home addresses,
  • personal home and cellphone numbers,
  • birthdates,
  • hire dates,
  • job titles,
  • Social Security numbers.

In response to this incident,the facility is working to minimize the potential adverse effects of the breach. As part of these efforts, individuals impacted by the breach are being duly notified about the incident. Additionally, the facility is arranging for free credit monitoring services for those affected, as a measure to protect their financial and personal information from potential misuse.

Update - The Wyatt Detention Facility reports more people have been affected by the November 2023 data breach than previously reported. As of March 25, Wyatt officials said they have identified at least 5,760 detainees, 3,644 current, potential and former staff and 185 outside vendors that have been affected.
