Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, confirmed a security breach of its Europol Platform for Experts (EPE) portal. The EPE portal is utilized by law enforcement experts for the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and non-personal data related to criminal activities.

Ahacker, known as IntelBroker, claimes to have stolen documents labeled as For Official Use Only (FOUO), which allegedly contain classified data.

Although Europol has confirmed the breach, it claims that no operational information or core systems were compromised and that the agency's primary operational capacities remain unaffected.

Europol has started an investigation into the incident and has taken preliminary actions to address the breach. The EPE portal was down for a period of time, probably to implement security measures.

IntelBroker claims to have the following information for sale:

  • Personal information of alliance employees and law enforcement agents, including those with access to the EC3 SPACE community.
  • FOUO source code, PDFs, and documents intended for reconnaissance and operational guidelines.
  • Access to several Europol communities and platforms, such as the SIRIUS platform, which is critical for accessing cross-border electronic evidence in criminal investigations.

IntelBroker leaked a sample of an EC3 SPACE database purportedly containing personal details of 9,128 individuals.

No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack, or the breach's full scope.

The breach could potentially risk the integrity of ongoing law enforcement operations and the safety of personnel involved. The exposure of operational documents and sensitive information could also offer malicious entities insights into law enforcement tactics.

Update - on July 6, 2024 IntelBroker announced the leak of crypto-related documents stolen from Europol's EPE platform: “Today, I have leaked a small amount of crypto-related documents from Europol’s EPE platform. Thanks for reading and enjoy!“.
