Farmers Insurance reports data breach caused by third-party vendor attack

Farmers Insurance Exchange is reporting a data breach that exposed customer information of thousands of policyholders. 

On May 30, 2025, Farmers Insurance Exchange became aware of the security incident after being alerted by one of their third-party vendors about suspicious activity. The vendor had detected unauthorized access to one of their databases containing Farmers customer information.

The investigation confirmed that an attacker accessed and stole certain customer data from the vendor's database. It took nearly two months of investigation before Farmers could fully confirm the extent of customer data exposure.

Exposed data includes:

  • Names
  • Addresses and contact information
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver's license numbers
  • Insurance information and policy details
  • Claim details and history
  • Financial information including payment card numbers
  • Bank account numbers

The total number of affected individuals is not disclosed. 

The incident was formally reported to both the California Attorney General's office and the Massachusetts Attorney General's office on August 22, 2025. Farmers Insurance began notifying affected individuals on the same day through written notifications.

Farmers Insurance is offering impacted consumers 24 months of free credit monitoring services.

The enrollment deadline for the free credit monitoring services is November 25, 2025.

Update - As of 25th of August 2025, Farmers reports that the incident affected a total of 1,111,386 customers.
