On November 9, a significant data breach impacted numerous Fordham University email accounts. The university's IT Office of Information Security and Assurance revealed that the breach originated from a vendor-managed application used by the university, compromising around 4,800 accounts.
The breach lead to the exposure of
- email passwords,
- names,
- phone numbers,
- gender identities
of both current and former students and staff.
No details are available about the nature of the breach.
Fordham IT swiftly logged out all affected users to secure their data and sent SMS and email notifications urging the users to reset their passwords. Following the incident, the university decided to stop its relationship with the vendor responsible, citing their outdated security measures as the cause of the breach.
The university is planning to introduce a new application to replace the compromised one and is encouraging students to regularly update their passwords and practice safe internet habits.
