French Crypto Tax Platform Waltio Hit by Shiny Hunters Extortion Attack

Waltio, a French crypto tax platform apparently was hacked by the Shiny Hunters hacking group.
The attackers broke into Waltio's data processing systems and stole sensitive documents and records belonging to 50,000 users. Part of the stolen data are tax reports from 2024. The exposed data includes:
- User email addresses
- Cryptocurrency asset balances
- Records of crypto profits and losses for 2024
The hackers used this stolen data to demand a ransom from the company. The nature of the attack is not disclosed. The company claims that banking details and tax identification numbers were not part of the stolen data and that the core systems are secure.
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office and the National Cyber Unit of the Gendarmerie started an investigation after Waltio reported the breach on January 23, 2026. This incident puts many digital asset holders in France at risk.
Authorities warn that scammers may use the stolen emails in phishing and scam attempts impersonating bank staff or police officers to trick victims into giving up their assets.
