On September 19, 2024, a hacker using the alias “grep” claimed that Dell had suffered a "minor" data breach, resulting in the exposure of 10,863 employee records.
The information was leaked on the notorious platform Breach Forums, where the hacker also revealed that the breach took place earlier in the month.
The data leak was analyzed by the Hackread.com team, and uncovered the following details included in the breach:
- Full names of employees
- Employee ID, a unique identifier for each employee
- Employee Active Status, indicating whether the employee is currently active
- Employee DNO, potentially representing a department number or another internal code
- Internal Employee ID, which appears to be a hashed or encoded value
There were only two email addresses from the @Dell.com domain found in the leak, and no plain text passwords. If the information is correct, cybercriminals can use the leaked information in social engineering attacks, particularly by impersonating Dell’s IT staff in phishing campaigns or phone scams to extract sensitive details from employees.
At this time, Dell has not yet commented on the current incident.
