Naperville Central High School inadvertently exposed confidential student data in its publicly released School Improvement Plan on Friday, September 20.
The breach was brought to the school’s attention on Tuesday, September 24, by the Central Times staff, leading to the removal of the documents later that day. Although the School Improvement Plan was publicly available through the District’s BoardDocs, only those with District 203 email accounts (including students and staff) had access to the exposed data. The district's IT department confirmed the breach was limited to the Central Times staff, who were instructed to delete any copies of the sensitive data.
This information, encompassing over 31,000 lines of sensitive data, affected all 2,433 students enrolled during the 2023-24 school year, including sophomores in the Class of 2027 and graduated seniors from the Class of 2024.
The breached data includes:
- Full names and student ID numbers
- Grades for both semesters of the 2023-24 school year
- IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and 504 plan statuses
- Eligibility for free and reduced lunch programs
- Dual language status
- Limited English proficiency status
Principal Jackie Thornton apologized for the incident, stating it did not reflect the school’s standard and assured the community that measures were being taken to prevent future breaches.
