Philadelphia officials have reported a potential data breach in the city's email system, where an unauthorized user may have gained access to city email accounts containing protected health information between May 25 and July 29 this year.

The breach was detected after suspicious activity was noticed on May 24, and cybersecurity specialists are currently investigating the incident.

The exposed data may include

  • names,
  • addresses,
  • birthdates,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • medical information,
  • certain financial details.

It remains unclear how the breach occurred and why there was a delay in reporting to the public. City officials are conducting a manual review of impacted email accounts to assess the extent of the breach.

Affected individuals will be notified via written letter.

Update -  As of 12th of July 2024, the city of Philadelphia is reporting that the breach of its email system is affecting 35,881 individuals.
