Prosper first publicly warned of the attack in mid-September but has maintained that there is no evidence of unauthorized access to customer accounts and funds, and customer-facing operations continue uninterrupted.

Attackers successfully accessed multiple database systems and made queries to customer and applicant data before the company detected the breach. Prosper has not disclosed when the attack began or how it was detected. According to data obtained by Have I Been Pwned the stolen information includes:

  • Physical addresses
  • Email addresses (17.6 million unique addresses)
  • Social Security numbers
  • Credit status details
  • Employment information
  • Income details

The number of affected individuals is approximately 17.6 million. Prosper spokesperson acknowledged awareness of Hunt's breach count, the company stated it is "not able to validate his claim". The nature of the attack is not disclosed.

Both customers and prospective customers who had applied for services through the platform were notified. It's not clear whether any credit monitoring and identity protection is offered to them.
