Schneider Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is reporting a ransomware cyberattack, disrupting their network systems since Sunday 21st of July 2024.

Schneider Regional Medical Center is located in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The medical center comprises three facilities: Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center, and the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute.

The detection of the ransomware attack was made by the hospital’s IT staff, who noticed irregularities in the network's performance. Steps were taken to identify and mitigate the threat and reported the incident to local and federal law enforcement agencies and engaged a third-party vendor to assist in assessing the extent of the attack and restoring system functionality.

The hospital CEO, Tina Comissiong, confirmed that the attack has led to significant operational challenges, including the unavailability of the patient portal and access to medical records.

SRMC claims to have has maintained all patient care services, but with some inconvenience to patients who rely on the patient portal and medical records. The hospital has activated its disaster recovery plan and is currently operating under standard downtime procedures.

No details are disclosed about any data stolen or number of affected individuals. The hospital is currently investigating the incident and working to determine whether any patient data was compromised. As of now, it has not been confirmed if any health or financial information has been affected.
