Showmax has been made aware that over 27,000 account usernames and passwords of their users were exposed online.

The suspected method of this data breach is a brute-force password guessing attack exploiting the lack of throttling and rate limiting in the platform's authentication and password recovery pages. This lack of controls enabled attackers to perform very fast cycling of attempted passwords until they guessed a correct password.

The parent company, MultiChoice, has acknowledged the attack and assured that their cybersecurity team is actively investigating the incident.

Showmax has emphasized that their databases were not breached and that they are committed to protecting customer information.
