UC Davis Health, a part of the University of California health system, reported that it experienced a data breach due to unauthorized access to an employee's email account, potentially compromising personally identifiable information of patients.
The compromised email account that was used for coordinating follow-up patient care, containing personally identifiable information, was the source of the breach.
Despite detecting the breach quickly and freezing the employee's credentials, the breach was publicly disclosed two months later, and affected patients are now receiving notification letters. UC Davis Health is offering complimentary 12-month credit monitoring services to those affected through Experian.
Unfortunately, no details are provided as to the root cause of the incident, the types of expoded data nor the number of impacted individuals. UC Davis Health is offering it's services to 33 counties to an estimated 6 million residents across Northern and Central California, so the possible exposure is massive.
