Wake Family Eye Care, a well-established optometrist practice based in North Carolina reported a data breach caused by a ransomware attack.
The data breach resulted in unauthorized access to confidential patient records. The compromised information include highly sensitive data:
- patients' names
- addresses,
- dates of birth,
- Social Security numbers,
- driver's license numbers,
- passport numbers,
- other government-issued ID numbers,
- insurance numbers,
- optical images, chart numbers, and related eye records.
Wake Family Eye Care detected that some of its computer systems had been encrypted in a ransomware attack. The practice mitigated the attack and engaged the assistance of third-party cybersecurity specialists to conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident.
The investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had indeed gained access to certain files containing confidential patient information.
