Wells Fargo reports customer data breached by former employee

Take action: Malicious insiders are the most scary scenario any company can face. When you face it twice in 6 months, you have to think hard what is happening in your organization. You are either hiring very bad people, are making people very angry at your organization or have absolutely no internal controls so anything goes. Whatever the reason, you need to change, fast.

Wells Fargo is reporting a data breach that has compromised sensitive customer information due to malicious insider. The San Francisco-based bank revealed that a former employee accessed and misused customer data for fraudulent purposes between May 2022 and March 2023.

Wells Fargo confirmed the breach in July 2023 and began notifying affected customers last month. The compromised personal data includes:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Bank account numbers
  • Credit/debit card numbers
  • Brokerage account numbers
  • Loan/line of credit numbers

As of now, the exact number of affected customers has not been disclosed.

Wells Fargo has not yet issued a public statement regarding the breach, but it is monitoring affected accounts for suspicious activity and claims to be reviewing security protocols to prevent future incidents.

This breach follows a similar insider incident reported in April 2024, when another former employee accessed and misused customer information, including mortgage account numbers.
