Children's Center of Hamden reports data breach exposing data of over 5,000 people

The Children's Center of Hamden, a nonprofit youth behavioral health agency located at 1400 Whitney Avenue in Hamden, Connecticut, is reporting a data security incident that compromised the personal and protected health information of 5,213 clients and staff members. 

The center provides specialized childcare services for youth struggling with psychological or social problems, physical or sexual abuse, learning disabilities, substance abuse, and family trauma.

The data breach was discovered on December 28, 2024, when center officials identified unusual activity within their digital environment. The investigation with cybersecurity experts confirmed that an unauthorized third party had accessed and potentially stolen certain files containing employee and client data.

The potentially exposed data includes:

  • Names (first and last)
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver's license or passport information
  • Biometric data
  • Medical diagnosis and treatment information
  • Protected health information

The total number of affected individuals is reported to be 5,213.

The center completed its review on August 7, 2025, and mailed notification letters to potentially affected individuals with available mailing addresses on August 28, 2025. The incident was  reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights on August 28, 2025.

The organization established a toll-free call center to address questions and concerns from affected individuals, with representatives available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1-833-426-3652.
