Crime group Play claims they have hacked Dallas County

The administrative body of Dallas County is investigating the magnitude and implications of a cybersecurity breach on their systems.  In a statement they said: "On the 19th of October 2023, an alarming cyber incident came to the attention of Dallas County, affecting specific sectors of our infrastructure."

Dallas County have engaged the expertise of an independent cybersecurity firm to conduct a comprehensive examination of the breach. No details about the incident are disclosed during the investigation.

The county administration has pledged to keep the public informed by periodically releasing updates as more insights emerge.

The hacking collective 'Play' claims to possess confidential records from the county's databases. The said group has abstained from specifying the nature of the data they claim to have. 'Play' has suggested they might disclose the acquired data to the public by the 3rd of November, as per their online post.

Dallas County has refrained from commenting on the identity or affiliations of the attackers.

Update - as of 11th of July 2024, Dallas County is notifying over 200,000 people that the Play ransomware attack exposed their personal data. The types of data confirmed to have been exposed vary per individual and include the following:

  • Full name
  • Social Security number (SSN)
  • Date of birth
  • Driver's license
  • State identification number
  • Taxpayer identification number
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

Those whose SSNs and taxpayer identification numbers were exposed will receive two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
