The personal information of over 5 million citizens of El Salvador has been leaked and is freely available on the dark web.

El Salvador, with a total population of around 6.6 million people, including a substantial diaspora, finds the majority of its adult citizens compromised by this breach. Initially, the massive 144GB data leak was made available for a $250 fee since August, but following the failure to meet a ransom demand, the threat actor released the information for free as a form of retribution.

The breach, deemed to be the largest in the nation's history exposes detailed personal data including:

  • full names,
  • birthdays,
  • phone numbers,
  • residential addresses,
  • email addresses,
  • social security number-equivalent DUI numbers.
  • high-definition, unwatermarked headshot photos

No details are disclosed about the breach and what is the source of the data.

The breach was confirmed by La Prensa Gráfica, a prominent Spanish-language newspaper based in El Salvador.

El Salvador has adopted bitcoin as legal tender, a move announced internationally before being communicated to the Salvadoran public.

El Salvador's engagement with digital currencies extends into its legislative and financial operations, with involvement from iFinex subsidiary personnel in drafting legislation and managing bond issuances and financial schemes that accept bitcoin and tether from institutional investors.
